Worms and pigs

I turned my compost in the garden bed yesterday and found to my delight that earthworms had taken up residence completely on their own. The bed has not been watered in years, and the dirt was so compacted and dry that it took quite a bit of digging to be able to mix the compost in. I am overjoyed that the worms found it, but mystified as to how. I suppose its just one of nature's gifts, and shouldn't be examined too closely. Welcome to the worms!

The pigs on the other hand were completely unwelcome. The migra (border patrol) turned up at the training session for 'No More Deaths/Samaritans'. I arrived early and saw the pair of them talking cordially to one of the organisers. One was a bottle blonde with too much makeup, and the other was a pudgy field officer in a heavy green uniform complete with gun.

I pulled the organiser aside and asked if we could request that he leave his gun in the car. No, she replied, it is not negotiable because its part of his uniform. She told me that both groups were working with the border patrol this year, she was happy they had come, and would not impose any conditions on them, lest they flee. I said I had no problem talking to them, I just felt uncomfortable about bringing a gun into the sanctuary of a church for a meeting of humanitarians. She replied that the situation was very serious because two members were facing court charges this year. I thought, what has that got to do with bringing a gun into a church? The matter was not up for discussion, she said, and walked away.

Agent Bailey's talk mostly consisted of telling us that we had no right to transport people in medical distress, and that the border patrol would not agree to any terms of working together. He also tried to elicit sympathy for the poor migra who often have medical distress of their own after walking for hours tracking down groups of migrants. He was sweating like a... well... pig during his talk, and kept stopping to catch his breath. He asked the group if it was hot in here or was it just him? The room erupted in laughter.
